Maui seemed like the perfect vacation spot for Jennifer Chan Heth, her husband, Josh, and their two beach-loving children. Soon after arriving from Alameda, CA, in early August last year, they settled into their rented condo in Ka’anapali, looking forward to days of fun and sunshine.

Adapt or die - the urgent need to change how we communicate emergencies

Watching wildfires rage across western and northern Canada, we’ve observed a troubling pattern: disaster and emergency response communications continue using a formula established over a decade ago. As changes in our climate continue to accelerate, it isn’t a question of how Public Information Officers (PIOs) can do better. With the lives and livelihoods of so many on the line, it is up to us to provide a solution.
